Congress recently approved a tax credit for those purchasing a primary residence between Jan 1, 2009 and Dec 31, 2009. Simply stated, if a person purchases a new home during this tax year and they qualify under the program guidelines they get an $8000 tax credit.
Qualifications include:
-He/she/they are first time homebuyers. First time homebuyer, under this program is defined as not having owned a primary residence for the past three years.
-Income limitations of $75,000 per individual and $150,000 per couple
-The home is purchased between Jan 1, 2009 and Dec 31, 2009. Purchased means that the home must have closed and have the deed recorded within this time period.
If/when one qualifies and purchases a primary residence within the time period, they receive an $8000 tax CREDIT. Previously the $7500 the government dolled out to homebuyers had to be re-paid, interest free over a period of time. This one is basically a gift from ole Uncle Sam, no need to repay.
